Collaboration is the focal point of this new Y5/K–2 school in function and form. Brainstorming with teachers, students, and administration led to designing the new Beacon Elementary with large, collaboration spaces connecting to the existing Anchor Elementary. The collaboration spaces, “Tiny Town” and the “Workshop,” share additional efficiencies with athletic amenities and the kitchen. A central public entrance allows for community use of the collaboration spaces while maintaining the security of the remainder of the complex. The two schools remain distinct and in separate wings, but together form the Dexter Early Elementary Complex (DEEC, pronounced “Deck” in keeping with the District’s nautical branding).
