Swimmers in Birmingham Public Schools may be having déjà vu. The new replacement pools Groves and Seaholm High Schools have now are virtually identical, and oriented on the campuses of the two buildings in similar ways. Both schools feature a new lobby and concourse area, with separate pool entrances. Upon entry to the lobby, visitors have an instant view of the water through a floor to ceiling glass curtainwall system. The pools themselves serve as competition swimming and diving venues and feature moveable bulkheads to allow for maximum flexibility. The eight-lane pools can be converted from 25-yard competition layouts to 25-meter layouts. The bulkheads may be moved to allow for coach observation closer to the diving area during practices, and can be moved in increments to accommodate traditional water polo practice and competition layouts. In addition to the pools, Seaholm’s gymnasium was completely replaced, and the Groves gym was remodeled. With equity among the two building’s features in mind, the two completed gyms are virtually the same.
