Sheiko Elementary School

A new, contemporary Sheiko Elementary building was designed to better align with the present curriculum and vision of the West Bloomfield School District. TMP’s design focused on enhancing elementary programming with flexibility to allow for future reconfiguration of grade levels while incorporating a local theme. In addition, the new building provides technology upgrades, better operational efficiency, improved environmental quality, and enhanced safety features.

From the moment students enter the new school, the design immerses them in Michigan history and culture. Providing a sense of local identity, visitors and students are welcomed by cherry blossom pendant lights and Petoskey stone map. Locally themed sensory walls feature gross motor activities and flexible furniture groupings. Combined white oak and textile flooring mimic the state’s rivers, lakes, and land masses.

A linear, slightly arched collaboration space is filled with abundant natural daylight. The space delineates the east side (port side) highlighting the rich history of Great Lakes shipping, from the western side (dune side) symbolizing Michigan’s beaches. Anchored by the grand Learning Stair and sculptural slide, the space serves as a gateway to access dining and gymnasium spaces, outdoor playscape, and upper level. Interactive displays throughout the area provide hands-on learning opportunities including a simulated campfire celebrating the state’s Indigenous Peoples.

The I-Center and STEAM Center are located on the Upper Peninsula-themed second level. These special project spaces allow direct access to an outdoor terrace featuring suspended rods structurally evoking the Mackinac Bridge. Located in Sheiko’s east wing, the Early Childhood’s cottage-themed learning studios incorporate floor and wall sensory activities to engage the school’s youngest learners.
